Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become a key enabler of sustainable development of the modern economy. In Tanzania, various national top level policies and strategies (e.g. MKUKUTA, MKURABITA, KILIMO KWANZA) recognise that ICT is important in realizing sustainable development in the country. However, relevant, usable, and useful utilisation of ICT for development requires sound research and innovation. This is because, ICT as a facilitator and a comodity, needs to be customised to provide practical ICT solutions for business problems. This can be achieved through high quality research and development of relevant innovations. However, such activities require focused leadership and coordination.

The Institute of Finance Management (IFM) has responded to the need for leadership and coordination of ICT research and innovation by establishing a Center for ICT Research and Innovations (CiRI). The center is aimed at coordinating and facilitating ICT related researches and innovations. The center will focus on developing business solutions that will enhance the achieving of social and economic development in Tanzania and beyond. THe outputs of the center will allow IFM to attract and utilise available resources to develop and contribute ICT solutions for the development of Tanzania. This will contribute into realisation of national top priority strategies such as MKUKUTA and the national ICT policy 2003.
